Bushmen give cause to celebrate Sir Laurens's birthday

The court ruling that the Botswanan government acted "unlawfully'' in forcibly evicting hundreds of bushmen from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a historic moment in the extraordinary drama I have been reporting here for 10 years.

I became involved in this tragic story through my friend Laurens van der Post, whose books gave such symbolic significance to the last bushmen living in the wild, describing their right to survive undisturbed as a real test of our modern world.
