THE FIRST TIME
I'm lucky enough to have lived in Venice and when friends came to
stay who'd never been to the city the first thing I did with them
was the same - not St Marks, but a trip by vaporetto (water-bus)
along the Grand Canal. Cars, taxis or buses drop you at Piazzale
Roma, a drab foretaste of the world's most beautiful city. But push
down to the busy waterfront and look for the No 1 or No 82 boats.
Then make sure they're going the right way - down the Grand Canal,
not round ...
