Sharon legacy is Israel's latest casualty of war

ISRAEL HAS added another casualty to the cost of its campaign in Lebanon: the legacy of the former prime minister Ariel Sharon.

Only six months ago Mr Sharon was hailed as a military and political titan who had plotted a safe course for his country in a turbulent region.

As the architect of last year's withdrawal from Gaza and a managed detente with Hezbollah to the north, he was hailed as both leader and steward to Israel's enduring survival. But half a year after he was felled by a stroke, Mr Sharon's legacy is in tatters and Israel's forces are confronting enemies on two fronts.
