ANTIGONE'S BROTHER lies dead on the battlefield outside Thebes having attacked the city-state. Though her uncle, King Creon, forbids his body to be buried on pain of death, Antigone defies him in order to honour the spiritual law that decrees burial of the dead. Tragedy follows. Written almost 2,500 years ago, Sophocles' Antigone is one of the plays that gave birth to Western theatre. And last year to celebrate its own centenary the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, commissioned Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney to translate it anew.
