The Naval Academy Is Not a Football School

As a 1987 Naval Academy graduate, I read "At Navy, Conflicting Missions" {front page, May 22} with great interest. The attitude among both midshipman athletes and officials of the Naval Academy Athletic Association seems confused about what being a midshipman is all about and why they are at the Naval Academy. The Naval Academy is not like civilian colleges or universities. The midshipman varsity athletes at Annapolis choose to play sports. No one is dependent on an athletic scholarship to be there.
