Lucy Rendell is known to few outside Orkney yet she has achieved a kind of immortality: her birth in 1981 - the first in the lonely valley of Rackwick for 32 years - was celebrated by two outstanding creative talents: the poet George Mackay Brown and the composer Peter Maxwell Davies, one a native Orcadian, the other an adopted son of the islands.
