WHEN WILLIAM COBBETT died in 1835, the obituary in The Times declared that he was "in some respects a more extraordinary Englishman than any other of his time''. Here was a man for whom, in his heyday, the streets of London would fill with cheering crowds - someone whose campaigning journalism was read both in the poorest houses in the land and in the studies of all the ruling politicians (who, invariably, were enraged by it).
