FATIMA MERNISSI was born 54 years ago in Fez, "a ninth-century
Moroccan city some five thousand kilometers west of Mecca, and one
thousand kilometers south of Madrid." Her father was a member of the
fellah, "rich landowners and sophisticated agricultural developers,"
as a result of which she grew up amid considerable privilege,
comfortably isolated from her country's widespread poverty. But
isolation, however comfortable, was not without its price, for
Mernissi was reared as a resident of a harem.
