AS A YOUNG publisher, Allen Lane once sought the opinions of two fortune-tellers. One was discouraging: ``There is little to indicate that you should go into business for yourself.'' But Miss Kate Murray, of Golders Green, was rather more perceptive: ``You have a fine intuitive mind, even if you need the stimulations of another person's mind and character to do your work.'' Warm-hearted and affectionate, she thought, but not passionate and rather liable to be over-anxious about his love affairs. ``I do not think you will ever get very stout ... but be very careful to limit the alcohol.''
