At his death in 1931, Sir William Orpen was probably Britain's most financially successful artist. Since then his fame has faded.

Today, Orpen is best known for his work as a war artist in France during the First World War. As well as portraits of army generals and politicians, Orpen painted the side of war that other artists chose not to. In 1918 crowds flocked to his London show to see grim scenes of dead soldiers in trenches and bombed landscapes.
