Ferdinand Columbus (1488-1539) is that rarity, the remarkable
child of an amazing parent. He was the illegitimate son of
Christopher Columbus. The turn of the 15th century witnessed
geographical and technological change comparable only to our own. The
"New World" of the Americas was its Outer Space; the mass production
of books and printed images its worldwide web.
Ferdinand was at the forefront of both the geographical and
cultural revolution. At 14 he accompanied his father on the fourth
