In 1978 my grandmother came back from the dead. Her name was Anne
Webb and she was my mother's mother. I'd always been told that she'd
died in India, where my grandfather, my mother, my sister and I were
all born.
I'd been asking questions about my grandmother from way back and
the answers were always too vague to be convincing. My mother didn't
speak about her own childhood, and if I asked her about my
grandmother she'd just tell me she'd died when my mother was nine.
Eventually, in 1978, when my mother was descending into
