The trick lies in putting the aircraft in a dive following the same path as an object would if thrown off a cliff with the same horizontal speed as the aircraft. The shape of this trajectory is a partial parabola, and in following it the plane and its contents behave as if they were in free-fall, with everything aboard falling towards the Earth with the same acceleration.
