Gent groomed for chairman's role at Glaxo Drugs giant to win 80 per cent of votes on Garnier's controversial pay deal

SIR CHRISTOPHER GENT, the former chief executive of the mobile
phone giant Vodafone, is expected to join the board of
GlaxoSmithKline as a non-executive director.
This appointment would be a precursor to his taking over as
chairman of the Anglo-American pharmaceutical giant, which has
recently been rocked by criticism of its executive remuneration
policy.
Although agreement on his contract has yet to be reached - and no
announcement is expected at tomorrow's annual meeting - talks are
understood to be well advanced.
The City would welcome his arrival as the heir-apparent to Sir
