The Literary Life

WHILE PLENTY of novels by French and German authors are translated
into English, works of non-fiction by their fellow countrymen are
generally ignored - unless they concern the Nazis or sex.
In the past couple of years Gallimard, for example, the venerable
French publisher, has had great home-grown success with biographies
of General de Gaulle (by Eric Roussel) and Jean Cocteau (by Claude
Arnaud), that were both published in the Broche imprint. Although
considered definitive works, neither has
found a British publisher.
