We've met once before, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and I, and it was not
an entirely happy experience. Or, rather, she was not a happy woman.
Dame Kiri arrived flanked by her manager and publicist. She was
chewing gum and wearing a fur coat. She looked like a lady gangster
from a TV series by Lynda La Plante. And she was about as forthcoming
as a gangster interrogated by a cop.
"I don't let my guard down. Ever," she said. "I like to have
control of my life."
