JOHN DONNE, writing To Sir Henry Wotton in 1597, declared: "Sir, more than kisses, letters mingle souls." As a poet, preacher and parliamentarian, Donne wrote thousands of letters. Edmund Gosse produced a life of Donne in 1899 and then compiled a selected edition of his letters. However, the need for a complete edition has long been recognised. In fact Oxford University Press commissioned a young Shakespearean scholar to produce a complete edition in 1934. Seventy years on, I. A. Shapiro is still at work on the massive, complex task.
