INSURANCE claims for subsidence are expected to rise in the wake
of last year's wet winter followed by an exceptionally dry summer.
The word "subsidence" strikes terror into the hearts of
householders and insurers alike, but the evidence suggests that panic
can be overdone.
In a bad housing market, the fact that a house has been
underpinned or has a history of subsidence can be used to knock
thousands off the price. But when the market is booming it makes no
difference to the selling price, estate agents say.
