KATE BRADLEY, the librarian at Toynbee Hall, is having problems.
"I'm trying to compile a definitive list of everything that John
Profumo has done here," she says, surrounded by sheaves of paper and
a leaning tower of social history books. "It's almost impossible."
She has been hard at work for months, trawling through Toynbee's
annual reports for a mention of Mr Profumo's elusive name. It was not
until she turned her attention to the photographs that she noticed
that all of them were accompanied by a small italicised credit: John
