AT THE beginning of 1891, a young Dutch woman named Johanna van Gogh-Bonger found herself freshly widowed, with a baby and two not terribly promising inheritances. One consisted of 100 paintings and drawings by her deceased brother-in-law, an almost unknown avant- garde painter who had shot himself the previous summer. The other was a vast cache of letters from the same deceased relation.
