Amersham is set to disappear from the map. Not the sleepy little town in Buckinghamshire, but the medical diagnostics business that from uncertain beginnings as Margaret Thatcher's first privatisation has grown into Britain's largest healthcare company.

In the biggest UK takeover this year, General Electric, the US conglomerate, has agreed to pay an electrifying pounds 5.7bn for it.

So Sir William Castell, the chief executive of Amersham, looks like the cat that got the cream. Not only have his shares soared in value to well over pounds 2m, but he also gets a bigger job.
