Majesty rises again in Siena A huge painting by Duccio, cut up 300 years ago, has now been reassembled. The result still inspires the faithful - and the faithless, says Alasdair Palmer

On June 8, 1311, Duccio di Buoninsegna finally finished his
enormous panel painting, the Maesta. It depicts the Virgin with the
infant Jesus surrounded by saints on one side and incidents from the
life of Christ on the other. The citizens of Siena were so pleased
with it they organised a major festival.
"On the day it was carried into the cathedral," records one
Sienese chronicle, "the shops were locked up and the bishop ordered a
great and devout company of priests and monks into a solemn
procession, accompanied by all the officials of the Commune. All the
