Who was the representative British artist of the 20th century? Not the best, the most typical. Henry Moore? Damien Hirst? Francis Bacon? David Hockney? All have good claims. But, oddly perhaps, none reflects more completely the dilemmas and dramas of British culture in that epoch than the romantic landscape painter Paul Nash. That is why Tate Liverpool is to be congratulated on the excellent retrospective that opened last week - Paul Nash: Modern Artist, Ancient Landscape, which continues to October 19.
