The metaphors people use tell you a lot about their state of mind: so when the Prime Minister said in a speech on Friday that "we are up for the fight", it struck me as no accident. The Tony Blair who walked into Number 10 in 1997 spoke the language of harmony, "new dawns" and soothing freshness. The Tony Blair of 2003 is altogether more pugnacious; or, more accurately, bellicose. Victorious in battle abroad, he looks forward to battle at home. The "Big Tent" has become a general's tent.
