It must have been peculiarly galling for the Duke of Buccleuch to
suffer the theft from Drumlanrig Castle on Wednesday morning of
Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna with the Yarnwinder - and not only
because the painting itself had been in his family's hands for more
than 250 years. For "Johnny" Buccleuch, who will be 80 next month,
has a remarkable record of holding on to the things that are his.
Despite the meandering paths of heredity, the visitations of the
taxman and the undisguised hostility of Labour politicians, he still
