`We did well last night," said Fr Michael Kujacz. "We drew against
Madrid." It was 1.30pm and we were lunching in a panelled dining
room, a large picture of St George slaying the dragon is on the wall
opposite our table.
Fr Kujacz was referring to his local football team in Valladolid,
the city two hours north of Madrid and the capital of the province of
Castilla y Leon. It is lightly industrialised, pleasant enough but a
transient stop for the average tourist en route to Salamanca. Its
