On a cold November evening in 1852, Lord Alfred Tennyson set off for his new home, which he hoped would be "far from noise and smoke of town". He stepped into a small open boat with his wife and servants and rowed across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

Later that night, he wrote, they arrived at a "house half hid in the gleaming wood" where far off in the distance he could hear "the scream of the madden'd beach dragged down by the waves". It was not an auspicious beginning.
