For Robert Wardle, the newly appointed director of the Serious Fraud Office, Asil Nadir's bid to clear his name could not have come at a more sensitive time.

Wardle's first few months as director of the SFO have been far from smooth. Last month Andrew Regan, the entrepreneur accused of stealing pounds 2.4m to bribe two directors of the Co-op, was found not guilty.

The SFO's six-year pursuit of Regan, which cost the taxpayer more than pounds 6m, was particularly embarrassing as Wardle had been directly responsible for prosecuting the case since 2002.
