Gravel is one of those paving materials that people either love or hate. It has a relaxed, informal feel to it, which can work equally well for the driveway of a country cottage or the large forecourt of a stately home.

I love gravel, but if it is badly laid or inappropriately used, it has its short-comings. Loose gravel can cause problems by being carried inside on the soles of shoes or by scuffing footwear - "it wrecks my `tart trotters' ", as my sister says of her expensive heels.
