Daniel S. Greenberg's dismal view of a new supersonic transport
{op-ed, May 4} is valid only if we assume that it would utilize the
35-year-old technology embodied in Concorde. Although that
technology enabled Concorde to prove that routine supersonic travel
was at least feasible, it was not sufficiently mature for
profitable, fuel-economical, low-noise operation at competitive
fares. For that reason neither Concorde nor the contemporary efforts
in this country and Russia ever led to large-scale commercial
supersonic operations.
