Brrrrrng, brrrrrrng! Commuters and tourists stare into space. Some furtive rustling and a mobile phone comes out of a bag. "YES?" bellows its owner in Italian, "I'M ON THE VAPORETTO!"

Makes me laugh every time. I don't know why, except that for me the vaporetto - or water bus - is utterly romantic, while for a Venetian it is simply a means of getting home. I find it one of the defining experiences of the city, like the Chicago El or the trams in Prague, and the first thing I do on arrival is go up and down the Grand Canal on Line 1.
