It's a stick-up: gum makers told to pay for the mess

CHEWING-GUM manufacturers will have to help pay for cleaning up
the mess left by their product under a new agreement being negotiated
with the Government.
The Deputy Prime Minister's office and the Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have told manufacturers that they
must sponsor clean-up teams and buy specialist machinery for local
authorities.
An estimated 20 million people chew their way through 935 million
packs of gum a year and councils spend about pounds 150 million a
year removing it from streets and buildings, according to Encams, the
