THE BRITISH citizen scheduled to die in the Texas execution chamber in nine days for a horrific rape and murder has told The Sunday Telegraph that he fears he will break down and cry on his death bed.

John "Jackie" Elliott, 42, who was born in Britain but was brought up in a Texas slum where he became a gangster, also spoke of his hope that British intervention may yet spare his life.

He is due to die at 6pm on February 4 by lethal injection in the prison at Huntsville, Texas, where 286 prisoners have been executed over the past 30 years.
