There can be few small ports with as much to offer visitors of all ages and tastes as Whitby. It is scenically dramatic - the old port nestles between the steep banks of the Esk estuary, guarded by the starkly jagged ruins of Whitby Abbey high on the headland above - and the town's colourful history, stretching back beyond the Dark Ages, is peopled by such disparate figures as St Hild, Caedmon, Captain Cook and Dracula's creator, Bram Stoker.

A visit to Whitby's clifftop, especially in wild winter weather, makes it easy to see why the scene inspired Stoker to thoughts of Gothic horror. The ...
