At the beginning of the 4th century BC, the ancient Greek painter Zeuxis of Heraclea won immortal fame by painting a bunch of grapes. So life-like were they, according to Pliny the Elder, that birds fluttered down to peck at them. In October 1964 an exhibition in a gallery on East 78th Street in New York achieved a feat yet more remarkable. So realistic were the works of art on show - by artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns - that they deceived not mere birds, but those far more sharp-eyed creatures, Manhattan shoppers.
