De Kooning at his best is the stormiest of masters. Just try - it's near impossible - to memorize the movements of his fleshy, fluid paint. His brush strokes hook and sweep. His figures fly to pieces - a breast becomes a rolling eye, shoulders a horizon. Nothing's battened down. Everything's at sea.
