Nature takes over from culture

From Mexico City we flew east to the Yucatan Peninsula where we spent a day and a night visiting the ancient Mayan sites of Uxmal and Chichen Itza. There were more pyramids, temples and bloodthirsty tales of human sacrifice and at each site there was a huge courtyard for the lethal ball game of Poc Poc in which one player per match would not only lose the game, but his life as well.

This time we were kept company by 3ft-long iguanas basking among the ruins and exotic birds serenading us from the trees. We also went to Merida, the colonial capital of the Yucatan, and the small town of Izamal, ...
