The news that Euan Blair is to read ancient history at Bristol
means that the country's two most famous students - the other, of
course, being Prince William - will not be studying at Oxford or
Cambridge.
The centuries-old institutions may have nurtured 40 of Britain's
53 prime ministers, but today Oxford and Cambridge are no longer the
places automatically attended by the children of the mighty and
fashionable. Brideshead, it seems, may soon be unvisited.
