In the summer of 1974, the New York dance critic Arlene Croce, together with a posse of other ballet people, flew up to Montreal to see the new sensation of the Kirov Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov, 26 years old. The company he was appearing with was not the Kirov - for political reasons, the great St Petersburg troupe had not set foot in North America since 1964 - but a pick-up group of Bolshoi, Kirov, and other dancers looking to get a breather from Soviet life and bring home some hard currency.
