Over the past thousand years, Hastings has been known for many different things. First a Norman invasion, then smuggling and seafaring, and, more recently, a certain run-down quality that has seen it fall far behind neighbours Eastbourne and Brighton as a tourist resort. In an attempt to restore some lustre to its rusting reputation, the town's authorities this year launched a rather immodest marketing campaign in which thousands of glossy brochures were left out in public libraries all over Britain, under a sign reading "Hastings Is Much Better Than Here".

So is it? That depends, of course, ...
