CHINA HAS launched a campaign to save its Great Wall after warnings that the treasured monument - reputedly the only man-made structure visible from space - is shrinking alarmingly.

Dong Yaohui, the head of the Great Wall Society of China, set out yesterday to walk its 4,500 miles with a team of 16 scientists and archaeologists to conduct the first comprehensive survey of one of the undisputed wonders of the world.

From Dandong, near the Korean border, their 18-month journey will take them through northern China to the western deserts where the wall finally peters out.
