After the splendor of spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils
and tulips, fritillaries and hyacinths has passed, a small gathering
of modest plants offers a change in tone and scale. Reaching their
finest hours in middle to late spring, Virginia bluebell, European
pasqueflower and leopard's bane are not as well known as the first
floral crop of the season. The balance between their flowers and
foliage is different, with delicate rather than overpowering blooms
peering out of a dense clutter of finely cut leaves.
