Scorsese prepares to realise David Lean's dying wish

IT WAS to be Sir David Lean's last and greatest film. Now, a decade after the Oscar-winning director succumbed to throat cancer, his dying wish of seeing Joseph Conrad's Nostromo translated to the big screen is to be realised.

Trustees of the estate of Lean, who died four weeks before he was due to start filming the three-hour epic, are in negotiations to allow Martin Scorsese to take on his original script. Scorsese, who directed Taxi Driver and Mean Streets, is in negotiations over the screenplay, which Lean believed could surpass his Oscar-winning classics Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Zhivago.
