British Museum opens talks over return of Elgin marbles
|
THE BRITISH Museum has softened its stance on the disputed Elgin
marbles by agreeing to an unprecedented meeting with campaigners
fighting for their return to Greece.
Neil McGregor, the newly-appointed director of the museum, has
said that he will hold private talks with members of the British
committee for the restitution of the marbles. It is the first time in
the 20-year history of the campaign to return the friezes to Athens
that the two sides have met.
