I FIRST met Jonas Savimbi - the Angolan rebel leader killed on Friday - in a setting perfect for a surreal Graham Greene novel.

The place was the small town of Silva Porto. The year was 1975 and the Portuguese were scuttling out of Angola - the jewel in Lisbon's imperial crown for more than 500 years - leaving three liberation movements, backed separately by Washington, Moscow and Beijing, to battle over the spoils.
