I was in the breakfast room of the Sawanoya Inn, on a tree-lined
street in a quiet section of Tokyo, having coffee with a honeymooning
couple from Slough. "Japan is a lot cheaper than we thought," they
said. "We've been here six days so far and we've spent about pounds
600 between us, including lots of presents and souvenirs."
I was not surprised. These days, with their country's economy in
meltdown, the Japanese have become extremely cost-conscious. There
