On a steaming September morning more than 40 years ago, a convict named James Carter chopped wood on a chain gang in an old-style Mississippi penitentiary and sang the song that is now at the top of America's Billboard pop charts.

As the nation prepares to make its annual bow to celebrity culture at the Oscar ceremonies in Hollywood, Carter has become its least likely new star. His success at the age of 76, and with it a fortune expected to reach several hundred thousand dollars, is being hailed as a fairytale ending that not even Hollywood could dream up, and a vindication of a life tested ...
