My immensely talented but academically rather average son has been rejected by Eton. In a frightfully consoling letter the headmaster tells me he will be writing to our preparatory school headmaster advising him of the decision. I was tempted to write straight back saying: "Don't bother, me old china. He doesn't go to a prep school; he's at a state primary; his headmaster is a headmistress, and anyway I am relieved that he hasn't got into the place."
