Since 1664 when Louis XIV of France decided to improve his painters by sending them to study at the Villa Medici in Italy, the Prix de Rome has been the golden apple of the arts. Centuries later, artists and scholars are still winning the prize of a stay in Rome, to the great improvement of civilization around the world.
