Since 1664 when Louis XIV of France decided to improve his
painters by sending them to study at the Villa Medici in Italy, the
Prix de Rome has been the golden apple of the arts. Centuries later,
artists and scholars are still winning the prize of a stay in Rome,
to the great improvement of civilization around the world.
This week in Washington, the American Academy in Rome, the only
one of the academies of 24 nations supported primarily by private
donations, is celebrating its centennial, with dinners at the
Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art and the Italian
