The tale of "The Banquet" is a loose adaptation of "Hamlet," that happens during the Period of Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (AD 907- 960), after the falling of the glorious Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).

In one of the kingdoms, Li (Ge You), the emperor's brother, seizes the throne. The widowed Queen Wan (Zhang Ziyi) marries the new emperor to protect herself and the Prince Wu Luan (Daniel Wu), who is in love with her and is now her stepson.
